A Community-Led Effort To Protect The Dales’ Environment

Every journey starts with a single step

Sustainable Swaledale was born five years ago from a simple idea: if our community wants to see change, it has to lead it. What began as a conversation over a pint and chips in a local pub has grown into a vibrant, grassroots initiative that combines local volunteer action with a broader vision for positive environmental change.

Thinking globally, acting locally

We work with volunteers on a variety of local projects that aim to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Two Dales, while fostering a sense of community responsibility. From increasing tree diversity and monitoring vulnerable bird populations, to restoring meadows and building engagement through the community vegetable garden, we believe it’s vital that people feel a sense of ownership over their environment—and collaborating with groups of volunteers is a great way to do just that.

By concentrating on local actions rather than large-scale activism, we hope that our efforts have a ripple effect, inspiring others to take small steps towards sustainability in their own backyards.

We were grateful to receive the ‘Caring for the Environment Award’ at the North Yorkshire Council’s Community Awards in 2024. We were also shortlisted for the ‘Campaign for National Parks Changemaker of the Year’ award in 2023. Read more about Sustainable Swaledale in the press here.
